This Puxing PX-888 Radio Transceiver can be used for both amateur and commercial applications. The programmable channel shift allows for easy communication with repeaters.

Beginning HAM
I got this based on the good price at Amazon and all my buddies were getting them. Know that you must have a license to transmit. These are single band radios. Mine does 136-174 MHz. The PX-888 also comes in the range 440-480(?) MHz. That could be a problem.Consider this cheaper dual band radio. http://www.amazon.com/BAOFENG-UV-5R-Transceiver-Earphone-Programming/dp/B0094DQGRA. I don't have it, but I am strongly considering it as I get closer to getting a license.One of the HAM radio gurus I work with tuned it to a local repeater. It works great, though I can only receive at this time.I've also been able to tune in our local weather radio and some FM stations.It seems like a good radio but beware the single band limitation.

Function=good. Programming=nightmare.
First of all this item works. What you want it to to it will. It is clear in transmitting and recieving. It's range is decent.Programming this gem is a NIGHTMARE. It is very user un friendly. It took a lot of patience and trial and error to manully program in the freq's I needed. Once I looked it up online and used other sources I figured it out. The manual it comes with is useless.

When i was unaware how well others worked
I thought these were great. However the truth is these are not that great in fact their not even good. They are more expensive than competitors and they are much more difficult to program. You can buy 2 uhf/vhf radios that work on both sets of freqs for the price of this one radio. Sorry but these ended up on a yards ale table after 1 years worth of use.
