Hole The DVD [2001]

"THE HOLE - FILLED IN"
I watched American Beauty for the first time a month ago and was so impressed with Thora's acting ability. I had not been bothered with the film previously as I thought it was one of those American Teen movies. You know the type, the ones that get good reviews for being poor - hype at the time but ten years later no one would think it was anything special. e.g "Scream", "I know what you did last summer", "Blair Witch Project". I am more into movies that are still good as time passes. So I bought THE HOLE on DVD last week and was not disappointed. I think it being set in England really did it justice. It made it stand out from those other American Teen movies I mentioned previously that it would no doubt be compared with by the reviewers. I can't believe Amazon's official reviewer didn't like this film. The movie had an excellent beginning and an excellent soundtrack. A must for any good move I feel. The theme tune really came into play in the final scene where Liz (Thora) is sitting outside the hole with the police as the Doctor looks on. That scene was an excellent ending and definitely the correct one to do. The Alternate Ending of the "One year later" on the DVD was right to drop with being too corny but still chilling. Notice how she was now calling herself Beth though and not Liz (Elizabeth).Nothing felt forced upon you. You didn't get the usual blond girls running down a corridor with over the top screaming. The material was presented for you to take as you see it. It was left to the audience and it didn't feel forced. The camera work was well done and well thought through. Maybe I see more than the film when I look at a movie lately. I notice how it is directed. The Directors commentary on the DVD was excellent.Throa's acting in this movie was so good that at the end I didn't want her to go to Jail and was hoping she would get away with it. After all, it wasn't her fault entirely. She didn't plan to kill them all. The only killing she did was Martin which was a shame as the rest of it was all accidental. She never went down there with the intention of killing them which I think was and excellent way to present a movie. Once she locked them in and her friend died she couldn't exactly reveal she had the key. She only killed Martin because with him dead it would be case closed. You don't get the feeling that she would be a danger to society - but more like this was a one off that wouldn't happen again in the future. If she had set out to kill the guy she loved it would have been a different story in the future. She was young and a victim herself of circumstances. But poor Mike. He killed himself twice. First when he said he didn't want to go for a Pizza. Had he said yes they both would have left the Hole as Liz wouldn't have locked the door. Then when she was about to reval she had the key, Mike started to comfort her and that made her want to stay there longer in that afwul environment. Had he not changed then she would have seen the locking them in as a pointless exercise and may have told them. The alternative to staying there was to leave, go back to school and see Mike around saying hello now an again. If she stays there, in the awful place it was, she gets more of his attention. She wanted that to last. But once one of them dies, she is trapped down there like the othes - even with the key.The movie was very well written in my opinion. When you hear the title and it is about teenagers you assume that some adult will have kidnapped them and locked them in and it will be a kidnapper in the woods type of movie. It was such a breath of fresh air to see that the adults had nothing to do with it. It was just some kids out for a good time that got into a bad situation. The acting was well done all around. It made you feel as if they had known each other for a long time at that school because of the chemistry between them.Thora plays the outcast character so well in movies and even when it was the second story when she was more close to Keira she was still outcast because the two guys were more interested in the blond than Liz.I would suggest buying this movie to anyone who likes to get to know the characters in more depth before they get killed off. People who will enjoy it will be people who watch it for the story and who can understand how powerful an emotion love is. The humour between the characters really made it for me. I can't believe Amazon aren't charging a higher price for this movie especially as the soundtrack CD costs a lot more.5 starts to this movie. I only wish I would have seen it on the big screen.

Great film.
This is the Italian release, it has English soundtrack but subs that you can't turn off, however most players can push subtitles off the screen these days so isn't really an issue.

A "Hole" lot of trouble
As a Thora Birch fan I was keen to add this to my DVD collection and as I was considering the idea it was shown on TV. I watched it with my wife and we were so impressed we bought it. As I haven't seen it since the DVD was bought a few years ago (2004 to be precise) it was with anticipation that we settled down to watch it again. The intensity of the action and the wonderfully misleading interpretations of the actual events were still in my mind and yet I was quite surprised to see how much of the film actually took place above ground. My memory was of the underground bits and I did recall those quite clearly. Another surprise was that Keira Knightly was the other girl, I had forgotten that! The actors all played their parts really convincingly, especially Thora Birch who has a wonderful ability to play innocence and evil together or definitively separate. I have enjoyed several of her films and am now looking forward to the remake of Jamie Lee Curtis' "Terror Train" which she has made recently. The idea of spending a few nights in an old bunker is a clever idea for a horror movie as it is so different from the slasher movies which seem to dominate the horror genre. In this the deaths, bar one, are accidental and this also makes for a great departure from the gory bloodfest which typifies movies from the horror genre. Some great twists and turns lead to a climax which even takes one more turn as the truth of the situation in The Hole is revealed. If you like your horror to have tension, this should suit you, but if you like gore and plenty of it then this may not whet your appetite. For me this is one of the better horror movies I have seen.

Really scary film!
I had no much idea what's this film about . I bought it because of Laurence Fox and hoped it will be worth of watching. I didn't need to be disappointed for it's very good thriller. It is really scary film because something like this can easily happen in real life. It's not the Stephen King-like hair-raiser about some pituitous monsters you just can't believe. There are obviously some people like Liz walking around and that is not funny anymore. And Thora Birch is just great playing this distressed and I think evil soul. I have only good words about Desmond Harrington, Daniel Brocklebank, Laurence Fox, Keira Knightly and always very charming Embeth Davidtz as well. And the music in this film is very good: a bit disturbing and supports the action nicely. And last but not least the director Nick Hamms commentary are very interesting too. It's a real must-see and must-have film.

Reasonably good story if not a little predictable.
This is a story about a group of people who investigate deep caves. There is way too much unnecessary swearing which brings the tone down a bit. The group is pursued by a mysterious flying thing that picks off the group one by one but in a way where you can see it coming. It was ok, but I did lose interest and watched until the end as I'd paid for it. It can also make you feel a bit claustrophobic as they are in deep holes and then in water. Don't watch if this makes you feel a bit panicky as it did me.

The Hole ~ Thora Birch version.
I had to add that as there are other 'holes' out there of varying quality. Enjoyable tale (if that is the correct way of putting it) of that oft used "crowd of folk getting bumped off by one of 'em but who?" ilk. Group of youngsters decide to party in an old shaft when things start going iffy and they cannot get out so emotions get taught. Although not difficult to work out it is still a great watch.

Don't listen to the naysayers
This movie is definitely worth a watch. Maybe if you've seen every movie ever made and are going to compare it to some other random movie and go into watching it with a closed mind, you may not like it...But I'm not a huge movie buff, and I loved it, not because it was action packed or anything, but because it was so twisted that when it ended I thought about it for days. Even now I just remembered about it and I'm here reading these reviews because I want to see it again. The bunker scenes are freaky, every last one of them. The whole atmosphere created by the director is amazing. Birch is an amazing actress but she is downright freaky/scary in this role, all the while still sexy in some insane way.Just ignore the tiny issues with it that you may find while watching, and enjoy the show for what it is - an awesome mindf--k!!

Was also genau ist passiert? Von mir also absolute Kaufempfehlung. Und, ... bei dem Preis kann man sowieso gar nichts falsch machen!Übrigens: der Soundtrack ist auch klasse.
