Q: Can the controller be charged by the PS4 charging unit?

It is only a type C charger so make sure you have a cable for it. It doesn’t charge with the ps4 regular charger.

Q: Is it legitimate? Does it effectively work? And won't crap out after week?

It’s worked for well for about a month for me. Playing games I have 0 problems at all. But I have to shut the controller off everytime I watch something. The controller will randomly start rewinding anything your watching.

Q: How do you switch off M1 M2 buttons? they interrupt gameplay

You can assign the M1 M2 with no function. But you can reprogram them to not affect gameplay. From the game manual, "Press M1 + share for 2 seconds. At the time, the game controller vibrates and the channel light flashes quickly." Then pick no key, and press the M1 again to assign no function. If you would like to reprogram it, press, for example, L1, and then press the M1 key again. So, M1 will mimic the L1 key. Follow the same for M2. I hope this helps!
