I recently purchased a cookbook of vegan Indian recipes. Some recipes contain asafoetida. This product is true to the flavor. I’ll warn you, the fragrance has bit of a funk, but that is perfectly normal. Use this spice very sparingly and the result will be fantastic.I think the best way I can describe its function is to compare it to anchovies (Italian marinara, etc.) or fish sauce (Thai, Filipino, etc. sauces).I must address a review I read regarding this product’s ingredients. Concerning the ingredients, this manufacturer clearly states on the Amazon description page:• Our Asafoetida powder contains Asafoetida resin, wheat flour (for smooth texture) and acacia gum. There are no chemical preservaties added.Overall, I am very pleased with this product. In light of the fact that I will be using this product very sparingly, I doubt I will run out of it very soon. However, if I needed more, I would definitely purchase from this manufacturer again. Two thumbs up!

...It's pure hing powder, and a lot of it for the price. You'll either love it or you'll hate it. Adding this along with garam masala makes commercial American supermarket Indian food like the company Saffron Road's dishes almost taste like the real thing.

I needed to replace onions, garlic, shallots, for dietary reasons, but avoid certain additives and fillers. This product met the need. It's a daily part of my diet now, on baked chicken, in sauces, even in tuna and salads. It adds 'something' the original vegetables didn't have. It doesn't have the "bite" of onion and garlic, or the sometimes "green" flavor, but what it adds really makes up for it. A great product and no digestive issues at all for me!

Zero taste or smell just not anything but a waste of money made with wheat instead of corn flour. I want my money back!

One thing I hear often is that the stronger it smells, the better the quality.If that's the case, DANG.At first I thought it was okay, just kept it in one bag, but nope, the next day the room smelled like... well, hing.So I double bagged it.Then I got complaints that the room stunk with an unfamiliar smell.Then I replaced the zip bags with better ones and did four of them, and now the room finally stopped smelling of it.After all that was settled, yeah, I used it in cooking a lot. One fun use I was surprised about was mac and cheese, but I've used it in a bunch of things.

I have nothing to compare it to, but it seems fine

I like this herb, I used to take it years ago and it save my life actually, I had temporal lobe epilepsy, I had a major reaction to Dilantin which actually damaged my vocal cords. I’m a retired herbalist now but I found this herb and it worked at that time it cost me seven dollars a year but as long as I took it I had no seizures. I only know one other person who got results like that though so it couldn’t hurt to try it if you do have temporal lobe Epilepsy. I just took a capsule twice a day but it Has to be pure this brand seems to be OK. I’m trying it now for my blood pressure don’t know if it’ll work but I’m drug resistant to medicines they just don’t work on me. I purchased it for this time to try it for my BP as Research says it could possibly help with this. I can’t say one way or the other. And if it’ll work for other people for either I also can’t say but it surely can’t hurt. Anyway this seems to be a good quality. Starwest Botonicals also sells their brand which is what I used 14 years ago. I was fortunate enough being an herbalist to find an alternative health treatment back then that cured me.

This product smells and tastes like it was freshly ground. It definitely has not been sitting on a shelf in a warehouse. I use this regularly because I love cooking Indian, Middle Eastern and East Asian foods. So far, this brand has been the best in quality and freshness.I also love the resealable pouch.
